The questions that come up before anyone has uploaded anything. Everything here is covered in more detail on the page it points to.
Do I need a subscription?
No. Ragextract is prepaid credits and nothing else — there is no monthly plan, no seat licence and nothing to cancel. You buy credits, they sit on your balance, and work spends them.
Is there a free trial?
Signing up comes with 2,000 free credits, which is 2,000 pages of reading, and no card is required. It is a grant rather than a trial: nothing expires after a fortnight and nothing starts charging you when it ends.
What does it cost to process a thousand pages?
A thousand credits, which is $2.50. Reading is charged at one credit per page, once per document, and a credit is a quarter of a cent. Answering is charged separately, per cell, at the column’s rate — four credits for a typed column, typically around twelve for a list column.
Which file formats are supported?
PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPTX and XLSX, plus JPEG, PNG and WebP images. Audio and video are not supported, and anything outside that list is refused at upload rather than accepted and then failed.
Does it work on scanned documents and photographs?
Yes. Scanned PDFs are read as page images, which is also what makes a citation a page you can look at rather than a line number, and the rate is the same whether a document needed optical character recognition or not. A single image — a photographed page, a screenshot — is read as a one-page document.
Can I email documents in instead of uploading them?
Yes. A table can be given a private email address — a mailhook — and the attachments on any message forwarded to it become documents in that workspace and one new row, which extracts itself if the table is in auto mode. Only the sender addresses you authorise can use it, and everything else is refused. Mailhooks need the Silver tier or above. Two things to expect: one email carries about 18 MB of attachments in total, which is less than most tiers allow for a single upload, and a mailhook never answers — no confirmation, no bounce, no rejection — so a message that worked and a message sent to the wrong address look identical from your outbox. Workspace settings → Mailhooks counts what actually arrived, which is where to look instead.
Do credits expire?
Yes — twelve months from purchase. Credits arrive in lots, each with its own expiry, and they are spent oldest first, so a balance is not one number with one deadline. The usage page breaks out what is expiring when.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are final, and a job that fails through our fault is made good in credits rather than in cash. The credits policy is the authoritative statement of that, and it is linked in the footer of every page.
What happens if I run out of credits partway through a job?
The run stops where it got to, and says so: the cells it could not pay for are marked “Out of credits” rather than failed, and they were never charged. Nothing already extracted is lost. Topping up picks the work back up automatically for rows that never ran at all, and a row that got halfway is one you rerun yourself. A low-balance alert is the way to be warned before any of it happens, because credits are spent by jobs rather than by anyone clicking.
Can a column answer with a picture instead of text?
Yes. An image column fills its cells with the page, or the part of a page, that shows what you asked for — a floor plan, a results chart, a drawing — and an image list column holds several. Each picture is cited like any other answer, back to the document and page it was cropped from. They cost the same as a typed column. Exports carry a description rather than the picture, because a spreadsheet cell is text.
Are answers checkable, or do I have to trust them?
Every answer records the page it was read from, and clicking a cell opens that page beside the table with the quote highlighted. The point of the citation is that verification is targeted: you check one page rather than re-reading the document.
What happens when I correct an answer?
Your value is recorded alongside the original rather than replacing it, along with who changed it and when. The table shows yours and an export carries yours, but the extracted answer is still underneath — which is what makes a corrected table auditable.
Can several people work on the same documents?
Yes. Access is granted per workspace, at Read, Read & Write, or Manage, to the whole organisation, a role, or one person. A new workspace starts either readable by the whole organisation or reachable only by its creator and the organisation’s owners and admins, as its creator chooses, and sharing a workspace shares every document and table in it.
Does Ragextract change my documents?
No. Uploading reads a document and indexes it; nothing is written back to the file, and the original is what every citation points at.
Is there an API?
Yes. The REST API is documented at ragextract.com/developers/api — it uploads documents, builds and runs tables, and reads answers back with their citations. Authenticate with a personal API key, created under Integrations → API keys in the app’s settings. These docs cover the application; the reference covers the API.
Can I connect Claude or another AI client?
Yes. Ragextract speaks the Model Context Protocol, so a client can read your workspaces, files, tables and extracted answers directly. A connection covers one organisation, reaches only the workspaces already shared with you, and is read-only — nothing a client does can change what is in your workspaces. Your owners and admins choose which tools each role may use, and you disconnect a client under Integrations → Connections in the app’s settings. Everything is free except searching, which costs $1 per 1,000 searches.
What happens to my data?
